The Perkeo has history dating back to the 1900s, when it was first released as an eye-dropper filling fountain pen made of ebonite with a gold, iridium, tipped nib At that time, users had to carry the pen nib-up to prevent leaking, making it a significant advancement over the more cumbersome dip pen and ink bottle.

Reintroduced in 2017, the modern Perkeo has been enhanced for today’s users. Constructed from durable injection-molded plastic, the Perkeo collection includes both fountain pens and rollerball pens.

The company behind the renowned German brand Kaweco, “Heidelberger Federhalter-Fabrik”, was originally founded by Carl Luce and Friedrich Enßlen in 1883 in Heidelberg, which started out as a producer wooden dip pens and seller of imported steel and gold nibs.  Since then, the company changed ownership several times, until in 1899, Heinrich Koch and Rudolph Weber took over the Heidelberg company.

The name, Kaweco, is a shortened combination of “Koch, Weber & Co”, which is derived from the founders’ names: Koch, Weber and Company.  Kaweco was initially used to label a collection of safety fountain pens, as seen in Catalogue 1908 (a catalogue of writing instruments at the time). Between 1910’s and 1920’s, the company became very successful as a market leader for fountain pens and dip pens.  In 1921, the company became a public holding company and by 1924, the company employed more than 1200 people.

However, starting in 1925, Kaweco faced stiff competition from Sonnecken and Montblanc as its business experienced a drastic decline.  In 1929, the Heidelberger company was forced to file for bankruptcy and in the same year, a small company out of Wiesloch, Badische Fullfederfabrik, run by J. Knust, Heinrich Woringen and Friedrich Grube, acquired Kaweco.  This company originally made push-button filler pens under the brand Aurumia and following the takeover, the brands, designs, models and filling mechanisms of Aurumia and Kaweco were merged, creating the original KA/WE/CO logo in a tripartite medallion that is still in use today.

Since then, Kaweco introduced many iconic designs are still in production today, including Special (previously known as Colleg-Extra), DIA and Sport.  Kaweco Sport was first presented in its current octagonal form in 1935.  This petite octagonal pocket pen became a staple due to its compact size and practicality. The Kaweco Sport series is still one of the most popular models to this day, available in various materials and as fountain pens, ballpoint pens, rollerballs and mechanical pencils.

Under the leadership of Friedrich Grube, Kaweco experienced a period of economic boom up until his passing in the mid-1960. By 1969, as traditional fountain pens were increasingly replaced by the more convenient ballpoint pens, the company faced economic difficulties and reached a settlement by transferring its intellectual property rights to Mrs. Grube.  Beginning in the 1970’s, as writing instruments become cheap mass-produced items, the structural changes in writing instruments industry led to the demise of Kaweco (for the time being) in 1980.

Then, a visionary pen collector named Michael Gutberlet came along to revive the Kaweco brand in 1994 under H & M Gutberlet gmbh in Nuremberg.  The modern Kaweco Sport was developed under the influence of the original Kaweco Sport design of 1935.  By 2010, the first revived Kaweco catalogue was published, with an expanded product range.  Today, Kaweco continues to produce a wide range of writing instruments, maintaining its commitment to quality and innovation while honoring its rich heritage.
